Session Report -- The Puft Misfits; Apr 5, 2020
For being the second time we've used roll20 and zoom, the game went pretty well. After the initial confusion of how to use roll20, everyone seems to be doing well with it. We gained a new player this session because his other games have suspended because of the stay at home orders.
The team, (Merza, Lyle, Hilda, Bala, Neely, Phaedra, and Geki) decided to go back to the Hole in the Oak, and complete their quest. The one thing of note was there was a room of four giant lizards (6 HD creatures), thus they were clearly over matched. The new guy may not understand that "balance" in old school D&D is not really a thing. Geki, the new guy, went in for close range combat with them at level 1. Most of the other melee fighters got away with just losing a shield and taking a few scratches instead of the very deadly bites. After a round, the group retreated and decided that they shouldn't take the four lizards head on. They came up with the idea to grab the fish that the gnomes were catching and use it to lure them away. Geki and Neely were on "Operation Fish Bag", while Phaedra and Hilda were on "Keep the remaining one away from the Cash", and the rest ran up to the altar to grab the electrum discs and golden bowl from the altar. In the end, nothing died (lizards included), and they made off with the loot. I can say the team is learning.
After returning, I presented them with several hooks. The one that landed was visiting the Circus on the Coast. Turns out, it'll be a trip that may take them around, 3 months in game time to get there.
They made it to the next town to the south, where they were recognized by a leader of a theater group being targeted by a noble to shut down a play. Even though the pay was poor, the team accepted the job, because they believed the theater had the right to free speech. They then scouted out the theater, and came up with a plan for protecting the troupe on the upcoming holiday performance. At this point, Astrid has gotten better, and now she and her doppelganger retainer will be rejoining the group; Bala will likely get set aside, for the time being.
Next time, I plan on giving them time to review the plan again, and revise it if they feel it is appropriate. We'll see how they adapt.
This group has come a long way since we started playing old school D&D. They used to be brash and would jump to attack or carelessly walk through hallways. Now though, they get worried if they don't have at least two 10' poles, consider retreating even if someone has taken any kind of wounds and they've started thinking about different tactical uses of spells.
